Modern Film Fest isn’t the only thing going on in downtown Kannapolis at the end of September. Here’s what else is going:
Friends of the Library Used Book Sale
The Friends of the Library will be hosting its used book sale to benefit the Cabarrus County Library - Kannapolis Branch. This sale helps the Friends of the Library purchase books and materials for Charles A. Cannon Memorial Library on Mountain Street.
Bring your gently-used hardback and paperback books for kids and adults, DVDs and CDs to donate to the book sale and stick around for a film or two at the Gem Theatre. The book sale is at the old Cabarrus Bank building, just a short walk down the sidewalk from The Gem Theatre.
The sale begins Friday, 1-6 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. Educators (teachers, assistants and home-schoolers) get discounts. For more information, contact the library at 704-920-1180.
Music in the Park
The City of Kannapolis is hosting bands in between films in Veterans Park right across the street from The Gem Theatre. The music starts Friday night and goes all day Saturday during the festival. Got a bit of time between films you want to see? Head on over to gazebo at Veterans Park, right next to the Core Research Laboratory at the N.C. Research Campus, and listen to some tunes!
Kannapolis Kares
Volunteers will be all over the city performing service projects to help keep Kannapolis beautiful and clean. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, with command central being the Village Park building, located along West A and West C Streets and North Loop Road. Education is the theme for projects this year. You may create your own project or volunteer with another project. Breakfast will be served at 8 am and lunch from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. at the park.
Anyone that volunteers with Kannapolis Kares will get $2 off the admission price for the screening of “The Way We Get By” at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Gem Theatre.

Veterans Appreciation Screening
We are showing “The Way We Get By,” a heart-touching documentary about three senior citizens who have greeted more than 900,000 returning troops at the Bangor International Airport in Maine. It is a modern tale of how volunteers can make a difference in the lives of others.
To salute our veterans, we are offering free admission to anyone who serves or has served in our Armed Forces. The film is Saturday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. Regular admission is the Gem’s usual low price of $4.
Come out, watch a great film and support our troops!
